We have an exciting new lab-based role for a highly experienced and creative synthetic organic chemist. Based within the medicinal chemistry department, you will provide expert synthetic chemistry support and leadership across a portfolio of projects and functions ranging from FBDD and synthetic technologies through to medicinal chemistry projects and the synthesis of novel target molecules. Working closely with other scientists including medicinal, synthetic technology and computational chemists, you will be part of a diverse and dynamic team with a culture of innovation and a mission to discover new medicines.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Apply your synthesis creativity and experimental skills across a portfolio of discovery projects in order to solve complex chemistry problems.
  • Be a Key Opinion Leader on matters of organic synthesis across the department.
  • Help to drive the expansion of our capabilities in synthetic technologies and high throughput experimentation in our newly built state-of-the-art chemistry automation lab.
  • Contribute to further growing the reputation of the Astex chemistry department for excellence in organic synthesis.
  • Contribute to the advancement of FBDD technology and learn to use cutting edge computational structure-based drug design tools
  • Support the safe day to day running of Astex’s chemistry laboratories


  • PhD in synthetic organic chemistry from an internationally leading academic institution, with strong practical laboratory synthesis skills.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ industrial or academic experience in organic synthesis applied to medicinal or process chemistry setting.
  • Exceptional knowledge of the latest developments in synthetic methodology and/or process optimisation technology.
  • A proven track record of solving challenging organic synthesis problems.
  • Outstanding teamworking and communication skills
  • High scientific profile demonstrated by publications and/or conference presentations.
  • A passion for developing new medicines
