Our R&D centre of excellence are looking for a Research Engineer to join our Artificial Intelligence Research Team, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a global organisation developing advanced clinical applications to transform patient care. We strive to create technology that makes a meaningful difference to people’s lives, helping doctors to help restore patients’ health and well-being.

Under the supervision of an AI Scientist, you will be tasked with the creation of innovative algorithms in bioinformatics and machine learning.  Applications include prognostic prediction in cancer screening based on multi-omics data (e.g.  somatic genomes and transcriptomics).  For this position, the primary requirement is for excellent coding and software engineering skills with a good understanding of classical and machine learning and an interest in deep learning. A background in bioinformatics and genomics are not essential, however, you should have a strong interest in moving into this domain.  You should be comfortable with general data science tasks – data wrangling, joining data tables, accessing public databases, exploratory data analysis, building and evaluating machine learning pipelines. A foundation in statistics would be helpful. We mainly work in Python, using libraries such as Pandas, SkLearn, Lifelines, Seaborn.  Deep learning methods might use Keras or PyTorch.  R is also used to access specialised bioinformatics libraries, such as Bioconductor.

You will be involved in various aspects of a collaborative research project, involving industrial and academic partners. You should therefore be an excellent communicator, with an innovative attitude to problem solving and a pragmatic approach to implementing solutions.  You will likely hold an advanced degree (MSc) in an informatics related discipline.

The Research Engineer role is part of our Scientific career track.

We aim to offer an inclusive, flexible and balanced working environment, by being an employer that cares for and respects its employees. We are part of a global family, that works closely with other development teams based in Japan, China, America, Canada and France, giving the opportunity of work placements at partner sites. As an employer, we want to provide you with the right environment to allow you to develop your career, by giving you time to learn new skills and pursue your own creative projects.

Please note this role may start remotely initially.

We’re happy to talk about flexible working.
