About us:
At Canon Medical Research Europe, helping care teams to get the best outcome for their patients is at the heart of everything we do. We strive to create technology that makes a meaningful difference to people’s lives, helping doctors to restore their patients’ health and well-being. Our R&D centre of excellence in Edinburgh are seeking a Team Leader for Bioinformatics, with the appropriate combination of scientific leadership and project management experience, who is enthusiastic, energetic, and innovative, and shares our passion for data science and the opportunity to contribute to our wider vision of empowering the patient and their care team anywhere in the world by transforming information into action!
About the role:
This is an excellent opportunity to provide scientific and technical leadership in an intellectually stimulating team-based environment, with the ability to guide and contribute to leading edge technology in the medical imaging industry. You will lead our bioinformatics data science projects and the activities of a small team of high-performing scientists, engineers, and clinical analysts, within our AI Research Centre of Excellence, reporting to the AI Research Technical Manager. You will lead the concept creation and development of innovative algorithms in bioinformatics and machine learning. Applications include prognostic prediction in cancer screening based on multi-omics data (e.g. somatic genomes, transcriptomics and immunohistochemistry) in combination with multi-modal data from health records.
For this position, we require highly developed technical and scientific skills, in particular an instinctive understanding of the principles of machine learning and statistics, an awareness of key –omics modalities of transcriptomics, genomic variants, immunohistochemistry, and techniques of differential gene expression analysis. Experience of working with bioiformatics databases such as GeneBank, KEGG and STRING is required. This should be combined with an understanding of the principles of deep learning and a solid grounding in software engineering. As we work mainly in Python, using libraries such as Pandas, SkLearn, Keras or PyTorch a good familiarity would be expected. Familiarity with R would also be of benefit, as this is used to access specialised bioinformatics libraries, such as Bioconductor.
About you:
The successful candidate will have well developed leadership qualities and be able to demonstrate leadership on challenging problems and technical debate, as well motivating teams and the fundamentals of good project management.
You will possess excellent communication skills, with the confidence to communicate at all levels of the organisation, including senior leadership.
You will be able to demonstrate strong teamworking and inter-team collaboration skills, the ability to give sound judgement, make independent decisions, filter and identify strong ideas, develop concepts from idea to design to development. You will be strongly motivated by work that makes a difference in a healthcare environment.
You will hold a relevant post-graduate qualification (ideally PhD level, or possibly Masters with appropriate experience) in an engineering, scientific, or informatics related discipline. It is essential you have a passion for science, technology, and learning.
