  • Purpose of the role:

    To develop, manage, maintain, and support NML IT solutions, including the NML website, additional supported websites (NML intranet and other NML supported websites), and various applications, including the interfaces and databases on which they rely.

    Key tasks:

    Under the general direction of the Web Technical Manager, this position will assist in the development and support of NML’s IT software solutions and website, associated supported websites and software solutions.

    This is very much a hands-on position requiring a high level of technical development knowledge and an ability to apply this knowledge to practical solutions.

    The postholder will be expected to play a key role in ensuring that the software solutions and website meets with the requirements of a wide range of visitors as well as serving the needs of a number of different departments within the organisation.

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    Broken down into the following categories (not all categories may apply).

    1. Relationships
    • To work as part of the IT Development team to deliver creative, robust website and other software solutions continually improving reliability and performance.
    • To work closely with our Digital Content team and other relevant teams to ensure a comprehensive website provision for NML.
    • To develop and maintain the technical aspects of NML’s intranet and associated infrastructure, working with other IS team members and key staff from across the organisation as required.
    • To provide the technical solutions required to enable business units and departments to fulfil their business objectives.
    • To engage with third party suppliers where necessary to deliver IT software solutions and web designs
    • To keep the Web Technical Manager and Head of IS informed of any developments, opportunities for improvement and issues relating to aspects of IT support, but especially those areas related to IT software development and Web technologies, at the earliest possible opportunity.
    • When required, to represent IS and NML both internally and externally at all levels in relation to the application of IT software development and Web technologies.
    • Liaise and consult with representatives from suppliers and consultants on all matters relating to the use of IT within NML.
    • To improve customer perception by providing a high level of customer service and encouraging good practice in others.
    • Ensure any unforeseen/exceptional events/issues should be escalated and acted upon immediately, keeping all members of department and relevant customers informed.
    • To participate in assigned projects, ensuring project plans are maintained and relevant tasks are delivered to plan, or any discrepancies are escalated to the relevant person.
    1. Representation                                                                              
    • Internal - Junior to senior management – providing specialist advice, attending multi-discipline project teams, discussing IS needs, maintaining relationships, communicating and explaining the IS activity
    • External – Junior to Middle management equivalent - representing NML externally at a wide range of forums including dealing with suppliers (resolution of problems, etc), explaining technical requirements, identifying and coordinating external partners and suppliers to work on NML IS projects
    1. Problem solving and decision making
    • To aid in the development and implementation of IT software development and Web technologies throughout NML, managing the provision of support & technical solutions for IT software solutions and the websites.
    • To follow the agreed Change management processes are followed to reduce unplanned outages.
    • To ensure that effective systems and processes are in place to collect usage statistics and monitor performance of the NML website, and to analyse these to identify any underlying problems affecting reliability and performance, and to apply solutions if needed.
    • Ensure that the NML website operates in accordance with all relevant technical and accessibility guidelines.
    • To assist in extending web based information and resources for incorporation into installations, events and activities at NML.
    • To identify and develop new web based services that exploit the technological possibilities presented by the Internet.
    • To accurately cost solutions, including total cost of ownership, prepare reports and analysis of solutions, and to present the case to the Head of IS.
    • To handle technical enquiries arriving via the web site and ensure they are dealt with accordingly.
    • To follow relevant, documented processes and procedures to ensure that a consistent, high standard of support is provided to users.
    • Ensure that all IT software solutions comply with existing IT standards, processes and procedures, and that standards are set for IT software development including the NML website.
    • Translation of Functional specifications into Technical specifications and then the delivery of application software components of software development projects
    • Maintain application software architecture integrity through adherence to development standards
    • To plan and prioritise your time working between any tasks and projects to which you have been assigned.
    • To participate in assigned projects, ensuring project plans are maintained and relevant tasks are delivered to plan, or any discrepancies are escalated to the relevant person.
    • Working to Industry “best practices”, to deliver high quality solutions around internationally agreed standards / protocols.

    1. Resource management                                                               
    • To engage with third party suppliers when necessary to deliver IT software solutions
    • To represent IS and NML both internally and externally at all levels in relation to the application of IT, from a IT software development and Web technologies perspective.
      • Liaise and consult with representatives from suppliers and consultants on all matters relating to IT software development and Web technologies within NML.
    1. Expertise/Specialist Knowledge                                               
    • Strong understanding of web technologies, including HTML5 and CSS3
    • Good understanding of Javascript and the jQuery framework
    • Familiarity with the use of browser developer tools for testing and debugging
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
    • Good understanding of web accessibility
    • Able to pick up new skills and knowledge quickly
    • Experience and/or knowledge of the Windows, IIS, SQL Server and ASP.NET platform is desirable
    • Experience of Contensis or any other ASP.NET-based content management system would be an advantage
    • WordPress and/or any other PHP content management systems

    • To ensure that the IS software solutions provide a reliable service at the required performance levels to enable uninterrupted business working and enable business units and departments to fulfil their business objectives

    1. Other                                                                                     
    • To adhere to NML's Health & Safety Policies and Procedures, and make a contribution to the continuance of a sound health and safety culture within the department
    • To carry out any duties of a similar nature as may be required by the Head of IS
    • To deputise for the Web Technical Manager in matters relating to web technical issues.
    • To prepare written reports and other documentation in a timely and proficient manner as may be required.
