National Museums Liverpool is a group of very different and wide ranging museums and galleries; established more than 150 years ago as a complement and counterbalance to the museums in London, and brought together in 1986 as a nationally-funded group as a symbol of hope and regeneration and because of the global importance of our collections.

We are looking for someone to join our senior leadership team and lead a new directorate focused on building our relationship with external partners and stakeholders. If you are a dynamic, innovative and energetic leader  who can build and grow positive relationships with partners and develop new relationships with businesses and future supporters then this could be the role for you. You will take strategic management responsibility for all externally focused operations including fundraising from individuals and trusts, corporate sponsorship, marketing and public affairs, digital content development, strategic partnership and wider stakeholder engagement whilst acting as an ambassador for NML, raising our profile across the UK and beyond.

As a member of our senior leadership team you will make a significant contribution to the achievement of our new vision for 2030 and will work with colleagues to develop our business. This is an important, demanding and rewarding role based in Liverpool but with significant travel to London and beyond. You will be a strong leader, with outstanding interpersonal, negotiating and influencing skills. You will bring people together to deliver outstanding results and to achieve stretching targets.

Purpose and Objectives

  • To take strategic management responsibility for all externally focused operations including fundraising from individuals and trusts, corporate sponsorship, marketing and public affairs, digital content development, strategic partnership and wider stakeholder engagement
  • To make a significant contribution to the development of NML’s strategic aims, policies and objectives
  • To serve as an ambassador for National Museums Liverpool, developing and maintaining key stakeholder relationships,  partnerships and collaborations which will include community organisations, universities and other research organisations, business partners, the public sector and NGOs
  • To raise the profile and enhance National Museums Liverpool’s professional standing within the museums community nationally and internationally and with key partners and stakeholders

Main Duties

  • Contribute to the continuing development and communication of a clear and ambitious vision for NML, working with the rest of the leadership team and wider leadership team to develop and drive the delivery of the strategic plan
  • Lead, direct and motivate staff to ensure the highest levels of performance in respective areas, consistently responding to stakeholders and sponsors to development sustainable partnerships for NML
  • Provide decisive and effective leadership to both your own directorate and the wider NML team
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with funding bodies and both private and public organizations to identify and maximize government grants allocations and fundraising opportunities, attracting external funding and progressing strategic alliances regional, national and international.
  • Identify and maximize all public relations opportunities through the press, broadcasting and social media and develop our digital content
  • Work with colleagues across NML to ensure development and delivery of the strategy plan

  • Assist with the supervision of volunteers and work placement students, undertaking periodic appraisal and facilitating their training in association with IS staff and NML’s Volunteer Coordinator.
