Volunteer DOREE (Demonstrator Of Really Entertaining Education)

Department – Live Centres: Aquarium
Hours By arrangement – 1-3 days per month at weekends and school holidays

Overall Purpose 

To deliver high quality, entertaining and educational craft sessions and drop-in rock pool demonstrations to aquarium visitors. 

Key Results

As a volunteer you will:

  • Gain confidence in working with visitors to deliver our public engagement programme.
  •  Work as part of a team of dedicated professionals to enhance the visitor experience.


  • Informal public rock pool demonstrations with live crabs, starfish and anemones in addition to other preserved marine specimens
  • Themed craft activities relating to the World Museum events programme
  • Recording visitor figures
  • Monitoring animal welfare

  • Feedback from Live Centres staff
  • Visitor feedback

Personal Qualities

Applicants must be aged 18 or over. We are looking for outgoing and lively individuals who can help us deliver an exciting and educational aquarium programme. Good communication skills are essential as well as being comfortable in front of a family audience. Volunteers will be working with members of the general public and will need the ability to tailor language and content to each particular audience.

Prior knowledge of marine biology would be an advantage but is not essential, as full training will be given. However a general interest in this area and an enthusiasm to learn about our animals is required. As National Museums Liverpool hosts children and vulnerable adults, all volunteering roles are subject to Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks.
