National Museums Liverpool (NML) is one of the world’s great museum organisations. We hold in trust and safeguard some of the world’s most important museum collections, which are universal in their range.

NML currently comprises nine museums: International Slavery Museum, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Merseyside Maritime Museum, Museum of Liverpool, Sudley House, UK Border Agency National Museum, Walker Art Gallery, and World Museum Liverpool.

Core Activities

Reporting to the Assistant Visitor Services Manager you will:

  • Work closely with colleagues across NML to ensure a seamless experience and ensure that consistently excellent standards are delivered for all visitors to NML.
  • Enhance the visitor experience by providing an enjoyable safe, secure, clean and comfortable environment.
  • Work as part of the Housekeeping and wider Visitor Services team to provide a consistently high standard of cleaning, visitor welcome and security across the estate of National Museums Liverpool.
  • Operate cleaning equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, buffers, scrubber dryers, wet vacs, as directed.
  • Maintain washroom area including the cleaning of toilets, urinals, sinks etc, as well as replenishing bathroom supplies.
  • Maintain gallery and public circulation areas, including hard floor and carpet cleaning, cleaning display cases and other surfaces.
  • Maintain non-public areas, including office spaces, bathrooms, kitchens and workshops as required.
  • Take part in programmed deep/intensive cleans of the above areas as per a scheduled programme.
  • Provide the highest standards of welcome and visitor care at all times, by actively engaging, providing assistance, orientation, general information, answering visitor queries and basic details of exhibits.
  • Ensure the security of all premises preventing loss and damage to collection items.
  • Assist in the evacuation of visitors and staff from National Museums Liverpool buildings in an emergency or exercise situations.
  • Report or action, as appropriate, Health and Safety hazards to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.
  • Ensure that any information i.e. leaflets, guides, brochures etc are stocked, relevant and date correct.
  • Observe safe working practises, complying with NML’s Health and Safety policy for both personal safety and the safety of visitors. This includes during the use of electrical equipment, COSHH, appropriate signage and Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Ensure sluice rooms are fully stocked and report replenishment requirements and faulty equipment accordingly.
  • Accompany contractors and external visitors as directed.

Additional Duties

As required, you will also:

  • Provide support for out of hours’ activities such as functions, private views and other events as required.
  • Undertake such training and attendance on courses and seminars which will assist in the development of skills which are relevant to the department, including first aid training.
  • Undertake any other duties as may be required from time to time.
