Background

The post holder will be based in the Fine Art section of the Art Galleries, at the Walker Art Gallery, and will be managed by the Curator of British Art.

Purpose and Objectives

To assist in maintaining, developing and monitoring the documentation of the fine art collection in the Walker Art Gallery, Lady Lever Art Gallery and Sudley House, with a particular focus on the Walker’s collection of over 8,000 works on paper.

To assist with the day-to-day management of the Tomlinson Digitisation Project.

To make the collections accessible through interpretation, research, online collections and other activities.

To further develop the post holders existing academic expertise, research and collections management skills.

To support the production of resources that will in the future support income generation for National Museums Liverpool.

Main Activities

Reporting to the Curator of British Art you will be required to:

  • Assist in maintaining, developing and monitoring the documentation of the collection, by researching basic contextual information and checking physical details for each artwork and updating Mimsy XG and historic object files accordingly, liaising with Conservation and Photography as required
  • Assist with the promotion of the collection and help make it accessible through research, documentation and online activity
  • Work with NML curators and external specialists to build information on the collection; 
  • Arrange for regular photography of groups of artworks and arrange their movement as required with the relevant departments
  • Supervise the movement of collections and the recording of locations
  •  Work with Photography to ensure accurate images are captured, including colour consistency, and uploaded to the Image Management System with the correct collections information 
  • Liaise with art curators and Photography to respond to requests for images and documentation from partner organisations and other stakeholders, eg Art Fund and Contemporary Art Society 
  • Check and research copyright information and update records appropriately 
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records to monitor progress and compile progress reports as required 
  • Provide information for grant applications to support documentation and related work 
  • Respond to internal and external enquiries about the fine art collection, if required 
  • Support the development on online displays and features in liaison with Exhibitions team and Curatorial colleagues, as required and relevant to the role 
  • Support special display and capital projects across the art galleries as required and relevant to the role 
  • Manage and supervise volunteers and their projects 
  • Represent the Art Galleries internally and externally as required
