Job description

Sustainability Apprentice

Ready to take the next step?

As a Sustainability Apprentice, you will play a key role in supporting our sustainability initiatives across the business. This includes assisting with sustainability reporting, contributing to internal and external communications, and supporting wider environmental and social value projects. You will help provide clear, reliable information for customer reports, internal presentations, and company-wide sustainability updates. This role supports the company’s ongoing efforts to improve environmental performance and achieve key sustainability goals, such as carbon reduction and responsible practises.

Alongside these activities, you will also provide support in sustainability-related content creation, including writing reports, presentations, and communications for both APS employees and external clients. You will work closely with the Head of Sustainability to ensure that sustainability information is accessible, engaging, and aligned with industry standards and best practices. Additionally, you will assist in tracking progress on key initiatives, ensuring engagement across the business, communicating successes, and collating content to demonstrate impact.

This role is ideally suited to an apprentice as it offers a fantastic opportunity to work across the business, collaborate with multiple stakeholders, and gain exposure to key sustainability principles, customer expectations, and best practices in responsible business operations.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist in gathering and organising sustainability-related information from various areas of the business, including environmental initiatives, supply chain activities, and operational improvements.
  • Support the preparation of sustainability content, customer-specific research, and company-wide sustainability communications.
  • Contribute to the creation of content such as internal presentations, reports, and digital materials to support APS employees in understanding sustainability goals and initiatives.
  • Develop clear, engaging sustainability content for external clients, helping to communicate APS’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
  • Collaborate with different departments to ensure sustainability information is presented accurately and effectively.
  • Support the continuous improvement of sustainability processes, ensuring clarity, consistency, and accessibility in reporting and communications.
  • Assist in identifying and analysing sustainability trends, initiatives, and best practices relevant to APS and its stakeholders.
  • Help track the progress of sustainability initiatives, ensuring engagement and traction across the business.
  • Support the communication of sustainability successes internally and externally, including collecting and compiling relevant case studies and impact stories.
  • Provide general administrative support to the sustainability department, helping to coordinate projects and maintain accurate records.

Development Opportunities

  • Exposure to all service lines with the APS Group, industry standards, and customer sustainability requirements.
  • Hands-on experience in tackling challenges related to data collection, interpretation, and reporting.
  • Collaboration with internal teams and external suppliers, building strong communication and analytical skills.
  • Gain experience in using tools such as:
    • Excel
    • Power BI
    • Industry-specific carbon calculation tools
    • Bespoke sustainability reporting platforms
  • Opportunity to contribute to wider sustainability projects helping to shape the company’s broader environmental and social value strategy.

Ideal Candidate

  • Strong interest in sustainability and responsible business practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex topics clearly and concisely.
  • Willingness to learn and engage with stakeholders across the business.
