Matchday Safety Steward

If you are offered an assignment of work as a Matchday Safety Steward, your role for the assignment will encompass the following duties.

Roles and responsibilities

  1. To assist the Club in the effective, safe customer friendly management of matchdays and event days at the Stadium.
  2. To assist the Safety Officer and Stand Managers in crowd safety management at the Stadium.
  3. To assist the Club in the effective, safe customer friendly management of matchdays and event days at the Stadium. 
  4. To ensure compliance with the terms of the Safety Certificate, Health and Safety Legislation and relevant Guides and Legislation.
  5. To enforce ground regulations.
  6. To report breaches of the club’s equality policy using established club processes.  
  7. To attend and respond to briefing and debriefing in relation to safety management and to report any matters of concern or interest to the Supervising Steward.
  8. To enable events to take place in a safe and secure manner.
  9. To deputise for the Supervising Steward if required in the post holder’s absence.  In that event acting in accordance with the role description for that post.
  10. To ensure that all pre-event safety checks have been carried out in accordance with established procedures.
  11. To recognise any unsafe crowd conditions, particularly over-crowding, and take appropriate action in accordance with established procedures.
  12. To liaise with members of the emergency services on matters of the match day operation.
  13. To liaise with catering and cleaning contractors to ensure safe customer friendly procedures are operating.
  14. To deal with any complaints in the first instance, referring to the Supervising Steward if resolution is not forthcoming.
  15. To comply with company regulations and procedures.
  16. To support and practice the company's Customer Charter.
  17. To follow the company’s Safety Policy.
  18. To undertake internal and/or external training required for the role as directed by the Club.
  19. To undertake such other duties appropriate to the level and character of work as may reasonably be required.  Significant permanent changes in duties will require agreed revisions to be made to this role description.

General duties and accountabilities

  • To support Brighton & Hove Albion FC and AITC in their aims and objectives at all times.
  • To ensure compliance with all relevant club policies, including health and safety policies.
  • To ensure compliance with all relevant legal, regulatory, ethical and social requirements.
  • To keep confidential any information gained regarding the charity, club and its personnel.
  • To represent Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club and AITC in a professional manner.
  • To maintain a flexible approach to work at all times.
  • To undertake other duties and responsibilities as required from time to time.

Qualifications & Experience


  • Valid and accepted enhanced or standard FA DBS CRC (Criminal Background Check) or be willing to undertake this check if successful
  • Willingness to work in crowd management in a football environment
  • Willingness to take part in briefing and debriefing
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to deliver and maintain high levels of customer service
  • 18 years of age or over
  • Friendly, helpful and cheerful persona
  • Attention to detail
  • Flexible approach to working hours
  • Ability to work to instructions under pressure
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • A genuine team player


  • Level 2 Crowd Safety Management or equivalent (achieved or in progress)
  • An interest in football
