Filling in an application form.

  • Try to find out as much as possible about the Company and the position you are applying for.

  • Read the vacancy description carefully to establish the required skills and experiences, do you meet the required elements?  

  • Ensure that you include in your application/CV the skills and experience you have that are most relevant to the vacancy.

  • Always back up your skills and experience claims with real and relevant evidence.

  • Give detailed answers making sure that they are relevant to the actual questions. Be clear, do not undersell yourself but always be truthful. If there is a question that is not relevant to you, mark N/A (not applicable) in the answer box, do not just leave it blank.

Preparing for a telephone interview

  • Think about where you will take the call.

  • Consider whether you are able to use a hands free device, make sure you speak clearly and do not talk over the interviewer.

  • Have your application/CV, copy of the vacancy and any other relevant notes or questions you may need on the table in front of you.

  • Ensure that you have pen and paper handy so that you can take notes.

Preparing for a face to face interview

  • Ensure you check the time, date and location of your interview, make sure you know how to get there and how long it will take you.

  • Aim to arrive early so that you are relaxed and have plenty of time to complete any induction procedures (which can take up to 10 minutes).

  • Review the key skills detailed in the vacancy, you may be asked about these in the interview. Think about how you could demonstrate them by giving relevant examples.

  • Consider how your experience matches the vacancy description for the role.

  • It is also important to remember that an interview is a two-way exchange - there will also be the opportunity for you to ask some questions, so think about what else you would like to know.
