What’s the Job?

You’ll be a Principal Scientist working with Senior Scientists, Lab support, Project Managers, Engineers, and external consultants to develop, support and test a range of technically leading hair care products.

In this role you’ll deliver hair science research programs internally and draw upon third party expertise to ensure substantiation of product performance supported by scientific claims. Supportive of colleagues in the analysis and interpretation of test results and coaching in correct experimental methods and practices.

What will I do?

Research & development

  • Generate understanding and building knowledge of hair science, providing insight and input to innovative new product development
  • Early stage development and testing of new technology in heating and air control
  • Support the creation of intellectual property and patented technology
  • Deliver published scientific papers from the ongoing quantitative and qualitative research into hair and organic materials
  • Communicate understanding and knowledge in hair science across ghd business competences
  • Co-develop product claims with the ghd marketing team, based on hair science understanding to build the product value proposition
  • Support the transfer of hair science methodologies to repeatable engineering design and production process methods


New product development process

  • Align with Project Managers on project status, development and deliverables
  • Lead the scientific claims feasibility and substantiation testing of products to meet Marketing requirements
  • Provide product claims support for the continuous improvement of current ghd products as part of product lifecycle management


Test method design & support

  • Design and development of product test rigs for lab and manufacture testing, including use of Labview
  • Development of methods for product testing and analysis to support market claims and quality control

Line Management

  • To line manage, lead and work alongside a team of scientists and lab support staff
  • To lead and work alongside external consultants

What skills and qualities will I need?

  • Ideally minimum 2:1 degree educated in physics or materials with good scientific method possibly with post graduate degree or post-doctorate experience. The role will expose the person to a number of new technologies at various stages of development
  • Significant and demonstrable post-graduate experience working in a relevant business
  • Ideally this is a post for a trained physicist with a materials processing background or materials degree
  • Previous experience working within consumer product development (required)
  • Previous experience working with UK mains voltage in a commercial lab environment (required)
  • Previous experience with product testing and statistical analysis (desirable)
  • Previous experience working on electrical hair care products (desirable)
  • Energy and enthusiasm for product development working in a highly dynamic environment
  • Exceptional planning and organising skills working within exacting timescales
  • Actively seeks to build and develop relationships both internally and externally
