What’s the Job?

ghd is a successful and growing company which preserves the original dynamic and start-up atmosphere and is backed by one of the three largest beauty companies in the world.  We have introduced many successful innovative products in the beauty hair appliance market, winning awards including Red Dot, iF as well as numerous industry accolades.  We pride ourselves on developing premium beauty products that meet the needs of both consumers and professionals, enabling more women around the world to get good hair days.

We ensure that our products are needs based by focusing on the consumer need as well as the technical possibilities and how to best match the two.  Based in Cambridge and London our talented and experienced Engineers and Designers work in partnership with our Marketing and Insight team to develop innovative hair styling product solutions. As we have expanded our team and increased our focus on product insights, we now have an opportunity for a Consumer Product Insights Manager to join our R&D team.  The role will be based at our R&D facility near Cambridge, with regular trips (every week) to our central London Marketing offices and Design studio.

What will I do?

  • Define new innovation spaces and opportunities to drive product upgrades via proposal, execution and analysis of research/usability findings and existing data/research.
  • Manage our R&D research calendar: define the scope and design of research activities linked to in-flight projects, prepare study documentation, manage product testing (in-house or externally in partnership with MR agencies), in collaboration with the multi-functional project teams.
  • Analyse, interpret, prepare and present the findings of research activities or usability evaluations to the wider team and senior management in a compelling way.
  • Envision, set up and manage the Cambridge research panel to facilitate ad-hoc/ongoing research at our new in-context research facility (with support from our site administrator)
  • Partner with our CMI team to support/advise on claims support testing and product qualification downstream testing.
  • Partner with our Science and Claims team and project teams to facilitate the translation of technical parameters into meaningful consumer benefits.
  • Partner with our Marketing team to facilitate translation of desired consumer benefits into meaningful technical performance parameters.
  • Partner with our Design team to apply Human Factors Engineering processes to determine customer needs and requirements, including the development of user profiles, target audience descriptions, and use cases.

What skills and qualities will I need?

  • At least 5 years’ experience working in consumer insights/human factors research.  Experience in consumer electronics would be advantageous.
  • A Scientific/Engineering/Research background - ideally hold an advanced degree in one of the following fields: Human Factors, Ergonomics, Usability, Product design, User Experience, Human Centred Design, Science or Engineering
  • An understanding of design and execution of a wide range of both qualitative and quantitative research methods ideally including digital research and human factors methods such as task analysis, use error analysis, expert review and co-creation.
