Head of Psychological Wellbeing Service – National Role
Help for Heroes, leading Charity for the Armed Forces Community, is seeking to appoint a Head of Psychological Wellbeing to lead the service. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced and motivated Psychologist to make a real impact through a specialist service.

This is a permanent role and offers a real opportunity for the right candidate to develop, inspire and lead geographically dispersed teams to deliver first class Psychological Wellbeing services.
We are looking for an experienced clinician with excellent leadership qualities, capable of ensuring a high quality, evidence based, cohesive, responsive and innovative service in the most efficient and sustainable way.
The role reports through to the Services Director and is responsible for the design, clinical governance and quality assurance of the Psychological Wellbeing Service to deliver an outstanding, positively impactful experience to move beneficiaries forward in their recovery. The role will work collaboratively with colleagues across the charity to help inform and deliver the charity’s strategy within their area.
We would expect the successful individual to demonstrate high levels of integrity and outstanding interpersonal skills, with the capacity for breadth and agility in a multi-faceted role
JOB SUMMARY AND PERSON SPECIFICATION
Job Title: Head of Psychological Wellbeing
Reports to: Services Director
Location: Tedworth House Recovery Centre, Tidworth, Wiltshire however extensive travel within the UK as required to fulfil the role effectively. Primarirly this will be to other Recovery locations in Catterick, Colchester, Plymouth and Wales.
Job Purpose
|
To lead the strategic development, continuous improvement and quality delivery of the Psychological Wellbeing Service for wounded injured and sick veterans and adult family members. This includes ensuring the service’s impactful contribution within the wider veteran charity and statutory service sectors.
The role is pivotal in ensuring the highest standards of evidenced based practice, service delivery and psychological care up to and including the ‘pre-3’ level, for the charity’s beneficiaries affected for example by common mental health conditions and/or physical health problems.
The post holder will provide professional accountability, leadership and clinical governance of the Psychological Wellbeing Service across all locations in which it is delivered. There will also be responsibilities in relation to overall future Recovery Services design where Psychological support plays a part.
The postholder will have the support of the Psychological Wellbeing Service Managers in meeting the varying needs across the charity’s service settings.
The successful candidate will have experience of working at a senior level and clinical leadership in this field. Evidence of line management experience is expected together with demonstrable involvement in service innovation, steering change and developing effective, collaborative relationships with colleagues. Training in Supervision will also be an advantage.

Main Responsibilities
|
- Determining the service delivery framework and scope of the Psychological Wellbeing Service to ensure delivery of a relevant, efficient and impactful service
- Setting the standards of delivery across the Psychological Wellbeing Service
- Overseeing Risk within the Psychological Wellbeing Service to ensure it delivers against best practice, including in relation to Safeguarding matters
- Leading on evaluation of the service and utilising data for the continuous improvement of the service, as well as to support impact reporting
- Proposing and implementing policy changes and service developments
- Manages, leads and motivates team managers and practitioners to ensure a ‘best in class’, cohesive service
- Undertakes research (for the purposes of insight, policy development, strategic direction, or teaching)
- Responsible for the psychological aspects of policy development for other aspects of the charity’s Recovery services, where needed
- May carry a very small specialist caseload of beneficiaries (by exception), and provides advice and consultancy to colleagues
- Being the subject matter expert for Mental Health and Psychological Wellbeing within the charity
- Engagement and service development with delivery partners and stakeholders in the third and statutory sectors
- Being the charity’s subject matter spokesperson on Psychological Wellbeing matters across media and communications platforms, and contributing towards the development of messaging and communications

Essential Qualifications:
|
- Qualified Psychologist with a minimum of 10 years’ post-qualification experience
- BPS/BACP/HCPC registered
|

- Demonstrable ability to think strategically and engage and influence with confidence at a senior level
- Demonstrable people engagement and management experience, including support on recruitment where appropriate
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge and practical capabilities of delivering evidence-based interventions
- Knowledge, understanding and experience of military related mental health issues
- Knowledge and experience of military and NHS mental health service provision and agencies
- Presentation and teaching skills
- Experience in working with the media
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office software
