The research undertaken by The James Hutton Institute is at the top of the global agenda addressing problems such as the threats to food and water security and the impact of climate change.

In association with Davidson Brothers (Shotts) Ltd (DBSL), the Environmental and Biochemical Sciences (EBS) group are recruiting a Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) Associate position which will develop new seaweed-based animal feeds with improved nutritional profiles and act as a conduit for knowledge transfer between Hutton and DBSL. The successful candidate will receive extensive practical and formal training, gain marketable skills, broaden knowledge and expertise within an industrially relevant project, and gain valuable experience from industrial and academic mentors. *The KTP Associate will also benefit from a tax-free Personal Development Budget of £6,000.

The Associate will assess the suitability of various seaweeds for formulation into animal feeds and develop nutritionally balanced formulations suitable for production into novel test feeds. They will also assess their physical properties, processability and develop methods to judge their nutritional suitability and acceptability by animals.          

To deliver effectively in this role you must have an upper second class (2.1) degree in a relevant biological science. Laboratory experience, with some background in chemistry, would be valuable and an MSc qualification in a relevant field may also be of value. You must be numerate, organised and able to absorb and distil large amounts of information. You should also be able to demonstrate the ability to handle numerical data and to produce written reports. You must have experience in the production and delivery of presentations and display flexible communications skills for interactions with DBSL staff, Hutton scientists, supplier companies, and DBSL customers. Overall, enthusiasm, self-motivation, and inquisitiveness are essential with an appetite for problem solving and learning. 

This post will be based at the DBSL premises in Shotts but you will be required to travel to the Institute site in Invergowrie; as there is no direct public transport a driving licence and transport would be useful.  Hours of work are Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm.

Main Purpose of Job          
Working between Hutton and Davidson Brothers (Shotts) Ltd (DBSL) to develop novel formulations of feeds containing seaweeds suitable for various animal feed uses.

Main duties of post holder

  • Assess suitability of various seaweeds for formulation into novel animal feeds, develop nutritionally balanced formulations suitable for production into novel test feeds
  • Use a range of analytical methods to determine the best seaweeds for inclusion into feeds, assess their physical properties, processability and develop various tests to assess their nutritional suitability and acceptability by animals
  • Analyse and collate data and develop product information sheets
  • Act as a conduit for knowledge transfer between Hutton and DBSL
  • Present results to DBSL, customers and stakeholders

Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge

Essential

  • The candidate will require an upper second class (2.1) degree in a relevant biological science
  • The candidate must be numerate, organised and able to take in and distil large amounts of information
  • Demonstrable ability to handle numerical data using Excel
  • Evidence of capacity to produce written reports
  • Experience in the production and delivery of presentations
  • Evidence of capacity to work with a wide range of different people
  • In terms of personal skills, enthusiasm, self-motivation, and inquisitiveness is essential.
  • Good communication skills are required as the associate will need to communicate with DBSL staff, Hutton scientists and collaborators, seaweed supplier companies, DBSL customers and stakeholders.

Desirable

  • An MSc qualification in a relevant field would be of value
  • Laboratory experience would be valuable, and some chemical background
  • A background in agriculture/ farming or an interest in livestock and/or in nutrition
  • An appetite for problem solving and learning.

Other Skills/Requirements

  • A willingness to travel is required as the academic and company sites are 70 miles apart with no direct public transport therefore a driving license and transport would be useful.
