We are looking for a skilled System Administrator to join a growing IT team to maintain, upgrade and manage our software, hardware, networks and cloud infrastructure.

Reporting to the IT Manager resourcefulness is an essential skill in this role. You should be able to diagnose and resolve problems quickly. You should also have excellent customer facing skills and patience to communicate with a variety of interdisciplinary teams and users with varied needs.

The successful candidate will be required to respond to 2nd line escalated support requests that cannot be solved by the first line IT Technicians.

You will be required to be self-sufficient and motivated in terms of being able to prioritise tasks and work effectively.

80% of the role will be focussed on maintaining Microsoft Windows systems with 20% of the work focussed on Linux; specifically Ubuntu Linux 16.04.4 and later.

Your goal will be to ensure that our technology infrastructure runs smoothly, securely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the configuration and operation of client-based computer operating systems

  • Monitor company systems daily and respond immediately to security or usability concerns

  • Monitor and report on data/system backup processes

  • Respond to and resolve escalated help desk requests (providing 2nd line support), troubleshoot issues and outages

  • Upgrade systems and processes as required for enhanced functionality and/or security issue resolution

  • Managing and maintaining server patching and upgrades, Windows and Linux

  • Administrate infrastructure, including firewalls, malware protection software and other processes

  • Install and test computer equipment, including specialist laboratory training

  • Maintain the existing change control process and policy. Aim to further extend and enhance this, as required.

  • Monitor performance and maintain systems according to requirements

  • Help development of company processes and policies designed to enhance security, infrastructure reliability and usability of company systems.

  • Upgrade systems with new releases and models as determined by business requirements

  • Assist in building and maintaining technical documentation, manuals and training materials.

Job Requirements:

Education & Experience

  • At least 2 years proven experience as a System Administrator, Network Administrator or similar role

  • Extensive experience and expertise with Microsoft Windows, networks and multi-platform patch management

  • BSc/Ba in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline; or professional certification (e.g. Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA)) is preferred but not essential

  • Experience of AWS administration preferred

  • Experienced in the management of Cisco devices (Catalyst switches and Meraki Wireless Access Points)

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of system security (e.g. intrusion detection systems) and data backup/recovery

  • Proven experience of administrating Active Directory

  • A good working knowledge of VMware ESX virtualisation infrastructure

  • Ability to automate tasks with scripts in Windows Powershell and/or other languages as required

  • Extensive knowledge of Windows 10, Windows server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2016, Ubuntu Linux 16.04 and later, operating systems and virtualised platforms

  • Resourceful, dynamic with good troubleshooting skills and aptitude

  • Excellent communication skills
