Purpose and objectives

  • To assist in the delivery of exhibition, display and web content for World Museum’s (WM) internationally significant Antiquities collection totalling 82,503 items.
  • To collect, document and retrieve information concerning WM and its Antiquities collection. 
  • To create, upgrade and maintain records on the collection using Mimsy XG.
  • To assist in the care, maintenance, display and interpretation of the WM’s collections and work as a member of a team.
  • Develop a curatorial specialism and responsibility relating to part of the Antiquities collection.

Main Activities

Reporting to the Senior Curator of Antiquities you will:

  • Support the planning, research, interpretation and delivery of permanent and special displays, galleries and exhibitions for WM and the Antiquities collection (and across the wider division/NML as required) to attract and engage a diverse audience. Over time, this post will develop a special focus and take responsibility for one area of the Antiquities collection.
  • Support special events, gallery and education programmes at WM and across the division and act as lead curator for smaller temporary exhibitions and displays.
  • Present curator talks and lead a tour of the venue for specialist groups as directed by senior curatorial colleagues.
  • Support senior curators by researching all new offers to the collection and maintaining contact with the potential donor all the way through the acquisition process and ensure that there is effective internal/external communication at all the key stages.
  • Undertake an agreed programme of retrospective documentation.
  • Photograph and upload images of Antiquities objects to corresponding records on MIMSY XG database.
  • Complete history envelopes for all new and retrospective acquisitions and to pass accession details and copies of relevant documentation to the Registrar. Maintain the department’s documentation and transfer on to computer data from daybook and accession forms. 
  • Mark, in a permanent and appropriate manner, all new and retrospective acquisitions with accession numbers allocated by the Registrar.
  • Store all new and retrospective acquisitions and update locations.
  • Check, update and edit object records on the Antiquities Mimsy XG database and assist colleagues in producing on line web catalogues and publications.
  • Assist with the preparation for display of any loans in or loans out and ensure all documentation and location is kept up to date.
  • Provide cover across WM collection areas, as required, and work as part of a data-management team with other Curators.
  • Be responsible for the good housekeeping of the main collection store and to check levels of storage consumables, re-ordering as required.
  • Have responsibility for managing and documenting the Antiquities library.
  • Monitor the physical and environmental condition of displays and collections. Take an active role in the gallery maintenance programme. Maintain appropriate records of such monitoring and use agreed systems to report concerns to senior colleagues. In addition to WM galleries you will also be responsible for object stores.
  • Arrange for the movement of objects, handling, and logging on to the computer database of such movements.
  • Supervise project, contract, and other staff and volunteers, as required.
  • Provide a public service by answering written and telephone enquiries as delegated by line manager and senior officers.
  • Ensure that our museums enable under-represented people, histories and communities to have voice.


You will also

  • Develop a curatorial specialism or lead in Antiquities.
  • Develop an overview of other similar collections that are relevant to our museums.
  • Initiate research and deliver content and interpretation related to the curatorial specialism.
  • Assess, advise and make recommendations on all loan applications relating to the curatorial specialism. Support the senior curators and undertake the curatorial work relating to loans into and out of the collection in conjunction with the registrars and other colleagues in accordance with NML loan policies and procedures.
  • Manage and develop the Antiquities collection database, provide cover across World Museum collection areas, as required, and work as part of a data-management team with other curators and registrars.
