Project Planner

(Location: Thanckes, Torpoint, Cornwall)

The role: A new and exciting opportunity has arisen at the OPA, as we seek to appoint a Project Planner to join our Capital Projects team, at Thanckes, Torpoint, in Cornwall.

In this recently created role, you will undertake the planning, co-ordination, and programming of deliverables for OPA Capital Projects progressing at Thanckes OFD (Oil Fuel Depot) ensuring that all tasks and activities associated with design and delivery of the Capital Projects at Thanckes, are included in the project plan, monitored, reported and completed in a time efficient manner.

There will be a need to build strong credible working relationships with all internal stakeholders, in particular, other members of the project delivery team, operations, maintenance, HSSEQ department, procurement and other discipline engineering colleagues.


The key responsibilities include;

  • Promoting process safety leadership as the core of OPA’s culture,
  • Be a key contributor to the Capital Projects Team to meet the project and team objectives,
  • Ensure planning activities completed within the Capital Projects are fully compliant with company policies, procedures and legal requirements, particularly safety and ensuring safe systems of work.
  • Ensure effective and appropriate communication at all times,
  • Report on activities and provide relevant management information,
  • Work within the OPA Project Management Procedures and workflows,
  • Plan and manage the programme of works for all tasks associated with Capital Projects delivery in line with company standards and relevant and UK / European legislation,
  • Develop and manage a robust programme of works,
  • Produce detailed programme of works/Gantt charts etc. using MS Project or other tools,
  • Interrogate 3rd party vendor, contractor and consultant programmes,
  • Produce monthly reports on progress, forecast completion and programme risks,
  • Develop Technical Standards within the planning programme department,
  • Assist with the development of budgets and forecasts for work,
  • Liaise with other members of the OPA Technical Team on company standards,
  • Identify and select suppliers in line with relevant legislation and Agency procedures,
  • Manage documentation/data/records within document management systems,
  • Apply the MOC process for the life cycle of the project,
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with the key stakeholders, both internal and external,
  • Maintain high standards of probity and confidentiality.

The candidate:  The successful candidate will be Degree qualified in Engineering or Project Management, and able to demonstrate proven experience of programme management, reporting, analysis and forecasting for design and construction within the oil and gas sector, preferably regarding the design and construction of fuel storage tanks, process pipework, associated electrical supplies, instrumentation, and civil and structural works projects.

You will have proven experience of working within MAH environments and managing programmes for multiple site works. As well as having a working knowledge of COMAH, MOC, and CDM regulations, in a similar role on projects of £20m+ total installed costs.

Previous experience of procurement processes, to support the planning of material management to ensure materials are ordered and delivered to site, on time, and to suit the overall project programme are essential for this role, as well as experience of acting as Planning Lead providing leadership and guidance within the team on planning / programming matters.

Some travel with overnight stays to other sites may be required, therefore a full (preferably clean) driving licence is essential for this role.
