Formal Learning Manager

£29,000 per annum

The Royal Armouries cares for one of the world’s oldest museum collections, presented at our headquarters and flagship museum in Leeds, at our historic home in the Tower of London, and at the Victorian Fort Nelson near Portsmouth. The Formal Learning Manager’s role is to help bring this national, iconic collection of arms and armour to life in an on-site and online programme that combines costumed, historic live interpretation, process drama, storytelling and play to deliver an outstanding learning-outside-the-classroom experience.

We’re looking for a dynamic and experienced manager to play a key role in our Public Engagement Team. In this post you will develop, manage and deliver unique, world-class programmes and resources for formal learners of all ages with dedicated teams at the Royal Armouries Museum in West Yorkshire, at Fort Nelson in Hampshire, and online.

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level, or will have equivalent recent experience of successfully managing complex, multi-site physical and digital programmes for a range of formal learning audiences, and will be up for a challenge! If this sounds like you…

This is a full-time permanent post working 36 hours per week, 5 days out of 7, some week-end and evening working would be required.

JOB DESCRIPTION

To play a key role in developing, managing and delivering a creative, high quality, well-researched and financially resilient suite of programmes and resources for formal learrners in support of the RA Public Engagement Strategy and the Formal Learning Plan, including Early Years, Key Stages 1-3, GCSE, GCE and 16+, FE and Adult Learning, at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, at Fort Nelson in Hampshire and online. To assist the Head of Education & Events in development of formal learning strategy, policies and departmental business plans.

Key Tasks

  • To manage the Education Officers at RAM Leeds and Fort Nelson; and relevant Education Assistants, interns, student placements and volunteers in the delivery of programmes for formal learners, EY to Adult, including training, supervision and evaluation, on site and online
  • To plan, monitor, evaluate and report on the efficient achievement of Royal Armouries’ programmes for formal learners, including visitor numbers, income generation, user satisfaction, etc.
  • To research and develop new learning programmes and resources, physical and digital, for new formal learning audiences.
  • To contribute to the development and review of the Learning Policy and related policies, the departmental strategy and the business plan.
  • To lead on assigned projects and to develop special expertise in selected fields.
  • To manage budgets, to meet income targets and achieve good value from expenditure
  • To support the sustainability of the programme for formal learners by working with the RA Development team to source appropriate grants
  • To ensure the effective promotion of programmes and resources for formal learners at all sites, working closely with RA’s Marketing, Web and Comms staff
  • To liaise with potential providers, audiences and with other museums & heritage sites; carrying out consultations, evaluations and (with the Marketing Department) market research
  • To ensure safe and secure working practices in all activities, with the safety of visitors, staff and volunteers and the security of handling collections, equipment and other resources recognized as priorities.
  • To perform other duties commensurate with the post. The role may alter with the changing needs of Royal Armouries and the job description may be reviewed and updated.

People

  • To manage the Education Officers at RAM Leeds and Fort Nelson and relevant Education Assistants, interns, student placements and volunteers
  • To collaborate with the Event Manager to ensure efficient and effective use of the department’s staff, budgets, rooms & other resources
  • To co-operate with colleagues within RA to ensure appropriate and proportionate support to projects such as temporary exhibitions
  • To work closely with designated partners outside the museum, in order to achieve shared objectives.

Relationships

  • To support the Head of Education & Events and the Public Engagement Director in strategy, planning, programming and ensuring high standards are met
  • To work collaboratively with the event staff and other members of the department, both at Leeds and at Fort Nelson
  • Cultivate internal relationships that cross departmental boundaries and demonstrate a willingness to collaborate with project team members, as required
  • Establish and cultivate partnerships with relevant external partners, stakeholders, etc

Budgets and Resources

  • Manage income and expenditure budgets, including forecasting & planning, as required
  • To liaise with the Commercial team in order to optimize income generation
  • Operate within RA budget and asset management regulations ensuring value for money
  • Assist in the management of departmental assets to minimise loss, damage and waste
  • Maintain or improve standards of services & products whilst controlling operating costs

  • Review and update departmental procedures to ensure efficient services, products, etc
  • Comply with H&S, Safeguarding, Data Protection, Equality and other relevant legislation
  • Ensure tendering and purchasing complies with RA Finance and Procurement policies
  • Ensure the application of RA organizational policies and procedures, including risk management, to protect people, the collection and the museum’s reputation

Physical Conditions

Able to work at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and at Royal Armouries Fort Nelson on a regular basis, and occasionally at the Tower of London or the sites of partner organisations. This will involve regular travel and some overnight stops at certain planned times. There will be a physical element to the role which will involve moving, setting up and putting away equipment, including heavy arms & armour, etc.
