We are recruiting 1 seasonal Museum Assistants to work at Fort Nelson on a fixed term basis from 20th May 2024 until 3rd November 2024

A Seasonal Museum Assistant is a front facing role whose duties iclude delivering daily events, such as running the junior summer assault course, engaging with visitors throughout the museum about the fort's history and collection, as well as operating the museum gift shop.

Applicants will thrive on delivering consistently excellent customer service. They will be energetic, enthusiastic and will have a positive ‘can do’ attitude. As well as being a team player, applicants should be flexible and self-motivating with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Applicants must have previous experience of delivering tours or similar, and be able to respond to visitor enquiries. An interest in the Fort and National Collection of Artillery is desirable.

Any successful applicant will receive a full induction and training will be provided for all aspects of the role.

This post works 36 hrs per week, 5 days out of 7 on a rota basis. 

Weekend, evening and bank holiday working will be required. 

This is a fixed term seasonal position working from 20th May 2024 – 3rd November 2024 exclusively.

Full Job Description

To be part of a team protecting and interpreting the site and collection whilst enhancing the visitor experience and bringing the Fort ‘to life’  Welcoming visitors, operating the gift shop, paid for experiences and delivery of the daily program are also part of this role. Museum assistants will complete opening and closing duties on site, and assist with events and venue hire functions.

Key tasks

  • To provide excellent customer care and engage proactively in a positive and friendly manner with all visitors
  • To provide information and interpret the collection and Fort enhancing the visitor experience
  • To work within the retail department assisting visitors with sales, enquiries, merchandising and housekeeping
  • To maximize commercial performance by achieving targets
  • To operate tills in an efficient and responsible manner adhering to cash handling procedures
  • To welcome visitors to site, assisting with enquiries, promoting events and activities
  • To deliver the daily program to visitors
  • To assist with corporate/private hire and other additional events and activities
  • To patrol all areas of the Fort and museum ensuring the safety of visitors and staff  and security of the collection
  • Opening and closing of site
  • Identify and report security risks, potential hazards, incidents and near misses
  • To undertake any other tasks reasonably commensurate with the job role
  • To support all areas/roles on site when required.

Reporting Structure

  • On a daily basis this post reports to the Duty Manager
  • This post is line managed by the Visitor Services Officer within the Visitor Services Department

Hours

Routine weekend, Bank Holiday and evening working will be required.

Hours are worked as follows, 36 hours per week, worked over 5 days on a rota basis.

Physical Conditions

Working both indoors and outdoors at a large site. Outdoor coat and wet weather uniform provided. Due to the location of the site applicants should consider their travel to work options.
