Catering Assistant - Fixed Term 

£11.44 p/h (£2,745.60 per annum 20 hours per week, 12 weeks, Fixed Term)

We are the UK’s National Museum of Arms and Armour, holding one of the largest collections of arms and armour in the world, including the national artillery collection and the National Firearms Centre collection.  

We currently have a position available for a Catering Assistant to join the team at Fort Nelson, the Royal Armouries Museum of Artillery and one of the last great fortresses ever built in Britain.

The catering business at the Royal Armouries Fort Nelson has undergone consistent growth over the past few years and the café is a significant part of the offer at the Fort.

The working pattern for this role is Tuesday to Friday, 5 hours over lunchtime, either 09.30-14.30 or 10.30-15.30 but some flexibility may be required to meet the needs of the business and cover for other staff.

Some evening and weekend work maybe required either as overtime.

Thise roles will assist in delivering great visitor experience through catering operations on site as part of the team operating the Café area of the visitor centre as well as assisting in corporate and private hire functions as required. Excellent communication skills, good customer service and a positive and flexible attitude will be crucial.

You will assist your colleagues in making sure visitors are able to enjoy their visit to the utmost whilst delivering commercial income through catering activities. Please refer to the job description for further details.

Fort Nelson is situated to the north of Portsmouth on Portsdown Hill, public transport is not available to site and so applicants should take this into consideration before applying

Full Job Description

To be part of a team operating the Café area of the visitor centre as well as assisting in corporate/private hire functions as required. Catering Assistants will be required to engage with visitors delivering customer service excellence and maximizing commercial income from Café operations. Able to prepare & serve food & beverage items at a high standard and all associated operations and procedures. High levels of customer service and personal appearance are expected as well as a flexible and proactive attitude.

Purpose

  • To provide an excellent catering offer and experience within our Café and engage proactively in a positive and friendly manner with all visitors. Work within the Café and other catering activities on site as necessary.
  • To work within the Café preparing food, taking orders, clearing tables, managing waste, processing deliveries, cash handling when operating tills, cleaning of kitchen & café areas, operating kitchen equipment and providing customer service excellence.
  • To actively promote and sell all café products incorporating add on sales where possible.
  • To maximize commercial performance by achieving targets.
  • To operate tills in an efficient and responsible manner adhering to cash handling procedures.
  • To work to the highest standards in food hygiene, health & safety and follow relevant site practices and record-keeping.
  • To provide excellent customer care and engage proactively in a positive and friendly manner with all visitors.
  • To assist with seasonal events/activities when required.

Reporting Structure

  • This post is line managed by the Catering Manager & on a daily basis reports directly to the Catering Supervisor

Physical Conditions

Essential to this role is that you must be able to multi-task and work in a demanding environment and have strong interpersonal skills. Some manual handling activity will be involved with this post. Working both indoors and outdoors at a large site.
