Technical Designer

Theatre Royal Plymouth is a registered charity, inspiring a lifetime of creativity for audiences, artists and participants throughout Plymouth and the wider region. As the principal home of performing arts in the Southwest, we engage and inspire many communities, creating memorable experiences for people from all backgrounds. TRP do this by creating and presenting a breadth of shows on a range of scales, with their extensive creative engagement programmes, by embracing the vitality of new talent and supporting emerging and established artists, and by collaborating with a range of partners to provide dynamic cultural leadership for the city of Plymouth.

The successful applicant would be based at TR2 Production and Learning Centre which is the Theatre Royal Plymouth’s purpose-built workshop facility based in Cattedown, Plymouth. Since opening in 2003, TR2 has provided state of the art workshop facilities for the creation of scenery, props, and costumes for a global theatre industry. TR2’s extensive engineering, timber fabrication and assembly facilities can support the simultaneous construction of two full-scale productions.

The Technical Design Office is at the centre of our construction activity, taking design concepts through to technical solutions.

The Technical Designer role sits in a small team that forms the Project Development Department. The role is project based and involves the production of technical design drawings to facilitate the delivery of a diverse range of theatre-based construction projects.

The Role

Working closely with the Head of Technical Design, you will produce technical drawings and disseminate information to the workshops. You will work closely with the workshop construction team in the efficient delivery of projects. You will work in collaboration with production managers and designers, other workshops, and sub-contractors. Based predominately at TR2, you will occasionally be required to attend meetings away from Plymouth.

This is a development role and will include a 3-year personal development plan.

  • You will work closely with Head of Technical Design to achieve the department’s goals.
  • You will work closely with the Head of Project Development to sustain relationships with clients and their design teams.
  • You will effectively communicate project-related information from the Head of Technical Design to the wider team and when appropriate to our clients and their creative teams. Apply suitable material selection when designing and produce detailed construction drawings for scenic elements using AutoCAD.
  • As a part of your day-to-day duties, you will liaise closely with our project managers to carry out detailed estimates and costings for materials and labour to inform the costing of projects.
  • As a part of the costing and project delivery activities, you will be required to purchase specific materials and equipment on a project-to-project basis.


  • When appropriate you will be required to relay painting and finishing information for the projects that we are involved into the appropriate team members.
  • You will create information to go to the client for sign off and then to the workshop for construction. As a part of your day-to-day duties, you will liaise closely with the workshop manager and his team.
  • You will bring together information for our review process, comparing the original design brief with the work carried out to highlight efficiencies and maximise profits for all our projects
  • You will work with clients, designers, subcontractors, and freelancers relaying information between the workshop staff to facilitate the successful delivery of all our projects.
  • You will bring together and communicate construction methods, instructions and build methodology for the delivery of our projects, ensuring the correct paperwork is available to the client on delivery for all elements of the project.
  • You will share information and celebrate our achievements of all that we do through a broad range of channels to a wide array of people as and when appropriate. 
  • You will need to take responsibility for health and safety regulations. ensuring compliance when necessary.

  • Knowledge and experience operating AutoCAD.to a high level of expertise.
  • A good working knowledge of 2D and 3D approached to drawing.
  • A basic understanding of mechanical engineering automation and control systems.
  • A basic understanding of structural engineering principles.
  • A good working understanding of engineering and construction for the creative industries.
  • Able to effectively manage your own time and work to project deadlines.
  • An understanding of parametric modelling software such as Solid works or Inventor would be desirable but not essential.
  • Basic skills in Photoshop, Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • A background in scenic construction or prop making would be desirable but not essential.
  • Strong visual communication skills.
  • Able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with a range of internal and external contacts.
  • Able to work collaboratively within a design team and to have the ability to work under your own initiative.
  • The ability to effectively communicate design concepts to others.
  • The ability to communicate technical construction information clearly to members of the construction team and external sub-contractors through technical drawings.
