CAD Technician

Theatre Royal Plymouth is a registered charity, inspiring a lifetime of creativity for audiences, artists and participants throughout Plymouth and the wider region. TRP do this by creating and presenting a breadth of shows on a range of scales, with their extensive creative engagement programmes, by embracing the vitality of new talent and supporting emerging and established artists, and by collaborating with a range of partners to provide dynamic cultural leadership for the city of Plymouth.

The successful applicant would be based at TR2 Production and Learning Centre which is the Theatre Royal Plymouth’s purpose-built workshop facility based in Cattedown, Plymouth. Since opening in 2003, TR2 has provided state of the art workshop facilities for the creation of scenery, props, and costumes for a global theatre industry. TR2’s extensive engineering, timber fabrication and assembly facilities can support the simultaneous construction of two full-scale productions.

The CAD Technician would work closely with the team’s Designers, taking concepts through the drawing process to enable the successful construction of scenery in our workshop’s.

The CAD Technician sits in a small team that forms the Project Development Department. The role is project based and involves supporting the day-to-day project delivery and facilitating the delivery of a diverse range of theatre-based construction projects.

The Role

Working with the Head of Technical Design, the wider team and the workshop construction team, producing drawings for our workshop to construct scenery.


You will be an integral member of the team whose work will help us in our day-to-day project delivery. This in turn will allow us to engage effectively with our clients and their creative teams and ensure we retain, and grow, our reputation throughout the creative industries.


The role will be based at TR2 and is responsible for helping us deliver elements of all our Design and Construction Projects and will occasionally mean attending meetings away from Plymouth.


This is a development role and will include a 3-year personal development plan.


  • Work closely with your line manager to understand, actively contribute to and achieve the department’s goals.


  • Contribute to conversations to help adopt appropriate construction methods and build methodology
  • Effectively communicate project-related information from the Head of Technical Design to the wider team and when appropriate to our clients and their creative teams.
  • Assist in bringing together information for our reviews of project delivery against the original design brief that we undertake, highlighting efficiencies and maximise profits for all our projects.
  • Assist work with clients, designers, subcontractors and freelancers as directed by the Head of Technical Design.


  • Work closely with workshop staff to facilitate the successful delivery of scenery.
  • Disseminate information and celebrate our achievements of all that we do through a broad range of channels to a wide array of people as and when appropriate.


  • Report back all project relevant and related information to your project line manager
  • Take responsibility for health and safety regulations. ensuring compliance when necessary.

  • Knowledge and experience operating AutoCAD.
  • A general understanding of engineering and construction.
  • Able to effectively manage your own time and work to project deadlines.
  • An understanding of parametric modelling software such as Solidworks or Inventor would be desirable but not essential.
  • A basic understanding of mechanical engineering automation and control systems.
  • A basic understanding of structural engineering principles.
  • Basic skills in Photoshop, Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Willingness to engage in learning new skills.  
  • Strong visual communication skills.
  • Able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with a range of internal and external contacts.
  • Able to work collaboratively within a design team and have the ability to work under your own initiative.
  • The ability to effectively communicate design concepts to others.
  • The ability to communicate technical construction information clearly to members of the construction team and external sub-contractors through various forms of information.
